The Cascais Marina
The old lighthouse of the Cascais Marina overlooks a pristine bay of sparkling water. Here you can find restaurants, bars, cafes, a newsagent, and some shops. The Cascais Naval Club is also situated there. Cascais Marina is a modern, well equipped marina with mooring for 630 boats and 120 berths for boats in transit. The Marina is only a few minutes walk from downtown Cascais.
Free Bicycle Hire
As part of an initiative to get people to use bicycles in Cascais rather than cars, the municipality of Cascais has put a stand along the coast, near Casa da Guia, where people can rent bicycles for free. You must leave some form of identity with them when you rent a bicycle, and when you return it, your identity document is returned to you.
Casa da Guia
Casa da Guia is a characterful old house which was renovated to provide the space for exclusive shops and an art gallery. Outside, several cafes and restaurants overlooking the ocean.
Qta da Marinha Club & Golf Courses
The Quinta da Marinha resort, where our apartments are located, contains a Tennis club which has two outdoor swimming pools that can be accessed at a daily fee, there are shops, restaurants, bars, a fitness centre, a horse riding club, and a two major golf courses: the Quinta da Marinha golf course and the Oitavos Golf course, also in the Quinta da Marinha resort area. Within a 10 km radius of Quinta da Marinha there are many other golf courses.
Guincho Beach
Guincho beach is the largest beach in Cascais and the coastal strip between Quinta da Marinha and Guincho beach hosts some of the top seafood restaurants, overlooking the spectacular sea view.
Boca do Inferno (Devil's Mouth)
Translated into English as 'Hell's Mouth' because of the formation of the rocks under the cliff where high waves are trapped on windy days, making a loud, scary sound and providing a fantastic spectacle on stormy days. At Boca do Inferno, there is a restaurant, Mar do Inferno, well-known for its shellfish, a cafe and a small market where you will find locals selling many typical goods, from Portuguese azuleijos tiles to linen and clothes.
The Square
The Square (Largo do Carmo) in Cascais town centre is packed with restaurants, bars, cafes, an art gallery, a news stand and shops. On summer evenings, this central landmark and the town are filled with people enjoying the charming surroundings and the live music which often accompanies drinks or dinner.
Rua Direita - Main Shopping Street
Rua Direita is the main shopping street in Cascais. It is a walking street paved with cobblestones, typical of old towns in Portugal. There are many restaurants, shops, bars and cafes in downtown Cascais. Among these restaurants are 'O Pescador', famous for its Paella and white sangria and 'Beira Mar', near fisherman's wharf, well known for its Seabass baked in salt served with a typical dish called 'Acorda'.
Fisherman's Beach
As you walk along the coast from the Marina to downtown Cascais, you will pass by Fisherman's Beach where you can see the colourful fishermen's boats dotted along the coast. Walking inland from fisherman's beach, you reach the town centre where one can stroll among the shops and cafes.
Wednesday & Saturday Fruit & Vegetable Market
Each Wednesday and Saturday there is a fruit and vegetable market in the town centre, which starts early in the morning at around 6 am. The market lasts until about 2 or 3 in the afternoon. There is also an indoor fish market where many fishermen gather to sell their catch direct to the public.
Cascais Train Station
The train station is located in the town centre from where trains leave to Lisbon very regularly (approximately every 20 minutes). Click here for train timetables.
The Old Train Bar & Restaurant
The Old Train in Cascais, just next to the train station, was converted into a restaurant and bar, a lovely place just to have a snack or a coffee while waiting for a train or walking past. It has a late license and so the time when it is most packed is usually during the late hours of the night.
The Boardwalk
The boardwalk or 'promenade' starts at Cascais, just after the train station and continues along the towns situated on the coast between Cascais and Lisbon. It is a twenty minute walk along the boardwalk to Estoril, and you may choose to walk further than Estoril, but if you walk too far, you may decide to take the train (which runs along the promenade) back!
Cascais Villa Shopping Centre
A recently built shopping centre between the train station and Jumbo, in which you can find cinemas, a food hall, shops and more.
Jumbo Hypermarket
Cascais' oldest hypermarket, where you can find an excellent selection of food, clothes, fishing rods, electronic equipment and much more. There are also several cafes and restaurants in the building. Car parking is free for the first three hours.
Cascais Cultural Centre
The Cascais Cultural Centre is built in the 'Rose House', which was part of the old convent of Our Lady of Piety. Today you can attend concerts in the evenings, visit art exhibitions,or participate in cultural courses.In the courtyard,Mize's restaurant is popular for its food and good service.
Church of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes
An old church in the centre of Cascais used by the Irish Dominican Brothers. English masses are held on Saturdays at 18:30 or on Sundays at noon.
